Will there ever be a day of peace and stability as the prologue of Her Warrior Lord suggests? The saints were to create a new world with a variety of life, but our story has conflict – no peace yet- otherwise why would we need warriors? Kyla is a woman gladiator who was banished from her community because she cheated at the gladiator games with a sword too long. She ends up in Egan’s township as a caretaker of horses. Their relationship grows as Egan is smitten with Kyla, but since she’s a virgin he has to go slow with her. The love scenes are intoxicating as Egan masters Kyla. Egan comes up with a plan for Kyla’s return to her homeland and proving Osianna is the one that originally cheated at the games. In the end Kyla has the choice to return to Balik with Egan or to stay in Darum with her family.
I would tend to rate this story as a historical romance rather than a fantasy paranormal because there’s little in the way of fantasy or paranormal. There is a visit to a wizard! And each person has his or her specialized expertise whether they’re a cook, gladiator, or soap maker, which really isn’t that unusual in this perceived time – travel by horse. As a historical romance I can appreciate each person’s benefit to a society. There may be some indiscreet nuances padding the fantasy genre label and I just missed them or I didn’t see them as being instrumental and overlooked them.
I thoroughly enjoyed this well-written, easy to read and entertaining novel. I would love to read more books by Celia Jade.
